Disgust is one of the seven universal emotions and arises as a feeling of aversion towards something offensive. We can feel disgusted by something we perceive with our physical senses sight, smell, touch, sound, taste , by the actions or appearances of people, and even by ideas. Disgust contains a range of states with varying intensities from mild dislike to intense loathing. Disgust may also alternate with the feeling of anger if the disgusted person is angry about being made to feel disgust. The universal trigger for disgust is the feeling that something is offensive, poisonous or contaminating.

In The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals , Charles Darwin wrote that disgust is a sensation that refers to something revolting. Disgust is experienced primarily in relation to the sense of taste either perceived or imagined , and secondarily to anything which causes a similar feeling by sense of smell , touch , or vision. Musically sensitive people may even be disgusted by the cacophony of inharmonious sounds. Research continually has proven a relationship between disgust and anxiety disorders such as arachnophobia , blood-injection-injury type phobias , and contamination fear related obsessive—compulsive disorder also known as OCD.
