They were among the most controversial and influential rock acts of the s, mostly because of Morrison's lyrics and voice along with his erratic stage persona, and the group was widely regarded as an important part of the era's counterculture. The band took its name from the title of Aldous Huxley 's book The Doors of Perception , itself a reference to a quote by William Blake. Another from the first LP, The Crystal Ship has been variously interpreted as a farewell to a love affair specifically, with early sweetheart Mary Werbelow , a goodbye to the dying and a trip to an afterlife dimension also the theme of debut single Break on Through. The lyrics are again possibly influenced by Vietnam, apparently referring to a soldier who makes love to his girlfriend for the final time before shipping out.
